Our Goal & Principles

The primary objective of the MIMLA is to create an opportunity for the youth of Manitoulin Island to be introduced to, and play the game of lacrosse. The sport of lacrosse was created by the Indigenous peoples of North America and has always been known to these peoples as a sacred, medicinal game. With this in mind, our core values of growing and teaching the game of lacrosse are seen to us as an ideal opportunity to teach the youth of our communities strong ethics and personal values. Instilling characteristics such as teamwork, confidence, and competitive etiquette in our players through the vehicle of sport is taken as our association's social responsibility within the community. By creating a regional association for the sport, we will also be able to add to the rich fabric of our community by fostering social, athletic, and economic connections; we will bring people in our communities together.

Additionally, lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. With the potential of the sport being included in the 2028 Summer Olympics, there has never been a better time to provide opportunities in lacrosse for the young athletes of our local communities. With the addition of teams in leagues such as the National Lacrosse League, Premier Lacrosse League, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association every year, the academic and economic opportunity for the players of the sport is increasing as well. Minor lacrosse has long been a mainstay of tightly knit, small communities throughout Ontario and it is long overdue for Manitoulin Island to have its own association.
